We are deeply committed to addressing systemic inequities that minority and women entrepreneurs face. By providing tailored support services, we strive to bridge the gaps that have historically disadvantaged these communities. Our programs are designed to level the playing field, ensuring that all entrepreneurs have the opportunity to thrive and strengthen their communities and their own future, regardless of their background.
Our purpose and mission are the foundation of every decision we make and every service we provide—extending to everybody on our team and in our support network. Our relationships are built on mutial trust and respect. We maintain the highest ethical standards and confidentiality in all of our interactions, ensuring that entrepreneurs can feel comfortable with the support they receive.
Strong communities are built and maintained by dedicated people and strong businesses. Our mission extends beyond individual success; we aim to uplift entire communities by empowering local entrepreneurs. By fostering a network of business owners who support each other, we create a ripple effect that strengthens the social and economic fabric of Rhode Island's diverse populations.
We understand that true success is measured not just by immediate gains, but by long-term impact. Our focus on sustainability helps the business owners we support plan ahead and prepare to ensure that they are not only profitable but also resilient and adaptable to change. We also provide ongoing support to help entrepreneurs navigate new challenges, innovate and grow.
Every business is different—and so are their owners. We take the take to meet our entrepreneurs individually to learn about and address their specific situations, challenges and goals. If we don't have the answers, we pair entrepreneurs with experienced mentors who provide advice and insights based on their industry and business stage.
We offer a wide range of resources and are constantly expanding our resource offerings online and offline. From professional services and administrative guidance to marketing strategies and funding opportunities, we provide our entrepreneurs with the tools, connections and knowledge to succeed. Our support ecosystem includes accountants, lawyers, marketers and other professionals who make their high-quality support accessible to our clients.
Through our extensive network, we have connected entrepreneurs with potential partners, investors and clients. We have spent decades building our network of change-makers and advocates in Rhode Island, including Urban Venture alumni who are eager to strengthen our community. Our network is built on mutual trust and respect, ensuring that every connection adds value for our community and entrepreneurs.
Business, social, legal, and economic landscapes are constantly evolving, and we actively engage with community leaders and policymakers to stay informed. We offer workshops, newsletter updates, online resources and educational opportunities to help entrepreneurs understand the latest trends, technologies and legislation affecting their businesses. Our commitment to continuous learning is essential and empowers our entrepreneurs to adapt and thrive.
Urban Ventures contributed to Rhode Island’s MBE Payment Pilot by ensuring timely weekly payments to subcontractors in state-funded construction projects. This program alleviated cash flow issues for minority business enterprises (MBEs), empowering them to compete more effectively and participate sustainably in public contracts.
Urban Ventures co-authored this report to address financing challenges for MBEs, proposing the Revolving Advance Fund (RAF). The RAF offers predictable cash flow by advancing project funds without credit or collateral requirements, fostering equitable access to public contracts and supporting business growth.
"A collaboration with the Rhode Island-based non-profit organization, Urban Ventures, will support and document the implementation of a 'virtual incubator,' which supports the development of micro-entrepreneurs as they seek to incubate their businesses and access potential state resources."

Businesses with 10 or fewer employees make up 73%-98% of Rhode Island’s economy, varying by community. In 2016, Rhode Island became the first state to officially recognize these businesses with the passage of the Micro-Business Law. Co-authored by Urban Ventures' leaders, JR Neville Songwe and Ron Crosson, this law enhanced visibility and support for micro-businesses statewide.
The strength of Urban Ventures lies in the diverse expertise and unwavering commitment of our team. Our staff and volunteers bring a wealth of knowledge from various industries and backgrounds, united by a shared passion for empowering under-represented entrepreneurs and communities.
